Easy ways to avoid a car accident

People spend so much of their time on the road. Especially if you don't live in a big city with public transportation, it is likely that you commute to work and you drive to complete errands and to get to appointments. Since you spend so much of your life in a car, staying safe is a top priority.

Car accidents can be a major drag. At best, a car accident slows you down, diverts your plans and maybe leaves you with a wrecked car and bills to pay. In the worst-case scenario, a car accident can be a tragedy. Many lives are lost due to an event that happens in the blink of an eye. Luckily, there are ways to reduce your likelihood of being in a vehicular mishap.

Keep your car in tiptop shape

By keeping up to date on scheduled maintenance, you will ensure the car runs as smoothly as possible. Brakes, tires, fluids -- all these require routine maintenance, or you could face a possible sudden and untimely stop in your chariot.

When considering your next vehicle, you may want to choose one with added safety features like rear cameras and electronic stability control. A few extra safety features never hurt when it comes to preventing accidents.

Keep yourself in tiptop shape

In addition to motor vehicle maintenance, another obvious tip is to make sure that you are in the best possible shape to drive. This can mean regular eye checkups, and/or using other adaptive safety equipment. In addition, you should know when you aren't at your best and you shouldn't drive. If you are sick, tired, or overly medicated you should refrain from getting behind the wheel.

Just say no to distractions

You are now in the heyday of the smartphone. Smartphones are great! Unless, that is, you are looking at one when your attention should be on the road. When you are driving, you owe it to yourself and to others on the road to fully focus your attention to the task at hand. You are driving a huge hunk of metal at high speeds, so it's in your best interest to pay attention. Additionally, most places in California require that a driver refrain from participating in distracting activities while operating a vehicle.

Be on the lookout

You can't prevent every auto accident. Sometimes other drivers are a concern. Therefore, defensive driving is necessary. Watch out for other drivers, who may be tired, distracted or intoxicated. Also, remember to check your blind spots, look around when going through an intersection and keep a safe driving distance.

In case the worst happens

Despite your best efforts, you could still potentially be involved in an accident. In case of an accident, you will want to stay safe, file a police report, and if you have suffered damages at the hand of another driver's negligence, you may want to consider your options for compensation.
